Can you microwave Styrofoam?
Some Styrofoam (this is the brand name for a type of plastic) can be safely used in a microwave oven but you should check for a microwave-safe label first.

According to the Harvard Medial School, the FDA tests the safety of all plastic containers under conditions within their intended use. When used in a microwave oven, these containers release chemicals (plasticizers) within an acceptable range. Using a plastic container that is not microwave-safe is outside the testing of the FDA and should therefore be done with caution, if at all, because the level of chemicals released may exceed an acceptable/healthy range.

Note that most takeout containers are not microwave safe so if you plan on reheating that meal you may want to transfer it to a glass or ceramic, microwave-safe container first.

Answer . Styrofoam is a trademark name for POLYSTYRENE THERMAL ISULATION material. it can be used as building materials, pipe isulation, floral and craft products.
What is styrofoam made of?
It starts with a plastic known as styrene. Liquid or soft styrene has air or gasses forced through it, causing it to expand or foam up. Styrene+ foam= styrofoam. The material gets lighter as it foams up, and later solidifies.

As of February 1, Sandals Resorts International (SRI) will eliminate all styrofoam from its 19 Sandals and Beaches Resorts across seven major Caribbean islands, in a continued effort to protect the environment.

“As we enter the New Year, it’s incredibly important to our Sandals family that environmental sustainability remains a key priority,” said SRI’s Deputy Chairman Adam Stewart. “After eliminating plastic straws, stirrers, laundry bags and gift shop bags last year, we’re choosing to eliminate styrofoam from our resorts. We’re proud that many of the islands in which we operate are also making this shift to ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean.”

The elimination of styrofoam is particularly important in the Caribbean region, where marine wildlife across the more than 700 islands and coastlines is abundant. According to Environment America’s Wildlife Over Waste campaign, scientists have found plastic fragments including Styrofoam in 86 per cent of all sea turtle species, 44 per cent of all seabird species and 43 per cent of all marine mammal species.

SRI said that the Sandals Foundation, its philanthropic arm, continues to amplify efforts to reduce pollution in the Caribbean and educate communities on the dangers pollution poses to the environment, health and tourism.

“Eliminating Styrofoam is yet another way we’re reducing our environmental footprint and improving the health of our Caribbean communities,” said Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, . “Education is critical, and that’s where the Sandals Foundation comes in. We want to keep our islands clean and beautiful for citizens, visitors and marine wildlife alike.”

In the coming year, Sandals Resorts International will also explore opportunities to eliminate other plastic across its resorts by September 2019.

INEPSA
The International Expanded Polystyrene Alliance
In 1992 EPS organizations from Asia (AMEPS), Europe (EUMEPS) and North America (EPS-IA) formed the International EPS Alliance (INEPSA) to enhance global EPS recycling and environmental stewardship. Thirty-one countries around the world have signed the landmark International Recycling Agreement, pleding their commitment to global EPS recycling.

Our Goals
The mission of INEPSA is to unite the world's EPS industry through increased co-operation and outreach. It also provides a focus for the discussion and the dissemination of information about EPS environmental and solid waste programmes to packaging professionals, product manufacturers, government officials, association members and consumers.

The agreement provided three major commitments:
To enhance existing EPS recycling programmes and initiate new ones to foster environmental stewardship.
Promotion of national recycling routes
Establishment of a world-wide network to exchange information on EPS recycling.
Members of INEPSA:

It is commonly understood that XPS offers more initial R-value per inch than EPS but because of its lower cost, EPS offers more R-value per dollar. It must also be noted that stated R-values of insulations products vary under different conditions and truly credible comparisons must take into consideration the specific brands of foam and specific test conditions.

XPS cells contain insulating gases in addition to air that eventually diffuses out of the cells, thus lowering the insulating value. The Long Term Thermal Resistance (LTTR) of XPS is therefore less than its "initial" R-factor. The R-factor of EPS remains constant over the life of the product because the manufacturing process used in EPS results in normal air, rather than gas, in the voids in the product.

While XPS is "extruded" into a close approximation of its final form, EPS is manufactured in large blocks that are subsequently cut by hot-wire machines into sheets or cut into virtually any special shape or form by computer-driven systems. EPS is also easily worked in the field during installation.

Although manufacturers of XPS and EPS often tout the fact that their products can be recycled, a complete life cycle analysis shows that EPS has a better overall environmental impact when compared to XPS. EPS can be recycled in many ways once it comes to the end of its life. These include recycling directly into new building products and incineration to recover its inherent energy content. The choice of a recycling method is based on technical, environmental and economic considerations.

Finally, XPS is often branded by its manufacturer and frequently comes in a number of different colors which have nothing to do with performance. Since XPS is typically more expensive than EPS, buyers need to closely compare the tables of properties for each product as compared to the needs of the application.

The deeper problems of advertising come less from the unscrupulousness of our deceivers, than from our pleasure in being deceived; less from the desire to seduce than from the desire to be seduced. — Daniel J. Boorstein, 1962

Sandra Low

Love, hate, pleasure, fascination. A healthy skepticism elicited by confrontations with fashion, consumption, obsession, and aspirational lifestyle propaganda. A crush on the visual appeal of awkward architectural space, self-conscious design, counterintuitive color combinations, and uncomfortable objects. The inescapable desire to own and eat stuff we know we do not need. A gallows humor in depicting attractive carcinogens. These are the shared conceptual territories explored in the stylistically disparate practices of painter Sandra Low and painter/sculptor Jaime Scholnick — showing together for the first time at the Rio Hondo College Art Gallery in Cultural Gumbo.

Jaime Scholnick

Sandra Low’s Classy Living and Melty Cheese paintings each exemplify her suspicion of the shiny dreams Americans are sold on at every turn. Taking the form of modernist architecture besmirched by mass produced comfort foods (the former) or else various items and interiors draped in melted processed cheese (the latter), in both series she definitely plays with her food. In Classy Living, that means lasagna, PB&J, cherry pie, fried chicken, twinkies, mac and cheese, and so on — all mass-processed and artificial everything. American food in the 1950’s was greasy, toxic, and synthetic in a specific way that was marketed as progress — in the same way the impractical antiseptic architecture of modernism was meant to frame the future. Low crafts allegories for that misguided commercial zeitgeist in which the severely angular homes are compromised by decay, graffiti, and messy foods which Low understands as avatars of humanity, wallowing in life’s “blobby mess” despite our best efforts at imposing order.

“Architecture and design magazines make me angry,” Low says. “That whole mid-century, functional-art, aspirational, clean and logical thing. Those structures aren’t rational, they don’t hold up against the messiness of life. In real life, nothing matches.” Cheese however (well, the cheese that comes in an aerosol can) goes with everything. In Low’s world it exists as a drippy, elastic medium, with a sexy sheen to it the source of which it is best not to contemplate too deeply. The melted cheese resembles a rich textile that recalls art-historical fabrics. In preparation for creating her dairy-draped figures of the Madonna and Buddha, or covering the furniture in the closed wing of a manor house, Low makes maquettes or models, and has become quite an expert in the various properties of artificial cheese products when exposed to high temperatures.

Jaime Scholnick

Jaime Scholnick’s abstract paintings and repurposed polystyrene sculptural objects and installations exude many resonant suspicions about modernism, post-modernism and the origins of our society’s terminal case of consumeritis. In Scholnick’s work, this skepticism is expressed in a predominantly abstract, non-figurative, pattern-based language employed as an oppositional impulse toward the sacred, ritualistic, and subtly political. She desires to overcome the wastefulness with the deployment of a more optimistic kind of beauty. Her patient, elaborate, complex, fractal, brightly colored and/or intensely graphical patterns and textures as applied to a typically discarded material (styrofoam packing forms) do not operate in a narrative mode — but rather in the materially transformational. While not didactic in her message, Scholnick is absolutely cognizant of the intrinsic qualities and the meanings carried in her chosen material.

2014-09-25-4JaimeScholnick_EveninginN.O.jpg

Jaime Scholnick

In Scholnick’s paintings the dense, intensive patterning migrates off the polystyrene and back onto the wall, and thus her linear color riots not only decorate but also define pictorial space and elucidate tactility in the surface treatment. This is accomplished with thick pigment often clotted with glitter and arrayed in an overlapping volatility of grids, lacings, crosshatching and etc. Furthermore, these paintings’ abstract character has lately begun interacting with borrowed images, frequently culled from fashion magazines and advertisements in the same love/hate/want/loathe game played by Low. Both artists admit to a paradoxical relationship of desire and disgust with popular culture; both use a constrained yet caustic wit to explore humanity’s contradictions — and complicities.

While EPS and XPS are two different products, they do have some similar characteristics and fall under the same manufacturing standard: ASTM C578 Standard Specification for Rigid, Cellular Polystyrene Thermal Insulation.

Pros and Cons of EPS and XPS
Pros:

Recyclable products that assist with LEED points.
Won’t support mold or mildew growth.
Long-term, stable R-value.
Can be placed below grade.
Can be utilized for inverted assemblies (over membrane).
Cons:

Exposure to sun will deteriorate the product.
Solvents/solvent-based materials cause irreversible damage.
Elevated temperatures (above 250 degrees F.) will “melt” polystyrene.
Incompatible with certain thermoplastics, polystyrene insulations are known to draw plasticizers out of thermoplastic membranes, causing permanent degradation.
Polystyrene is flammable, requiring proper placement in any assembly.
This particular specification covers the different types and physical properties of cellular polystyrene intended for use as thermal insulation.
Polystyrene insulation materials that fall under ASTM C578 fall into several different classifications: Type I through Type XII (with the exception of Type III, which is no longer available). The different classifications relate directly to physical characteristics of each type – most notably, the density, compressive resistance, and R-value. The range in densities and compressive strengths allows for specific uses on different parts of a building.

Polystyrene insulation is manufactured in a variety of board sizes – usually a minimum of 1-inch thick. Tapered units are also manufactured for use in roofing assemblies where the insulation is used to create slope for positive drainage. One of the more common uses in roofing is the ballasted single-ply roof assembly, where a roof membrane is placed over the insulation and ballasted with rock, concrete pavers, or other material.

Polystyrene insulations can be used in asphalt built-up roofing systems; however, provisions must be made to protect the insulation from heat (i.e. hot bitumen or torch) and solvent-based products (i.e. adhesives). In addition, certain thermoplastic roof membranes require a separation layer between the layer of insulation and the membrane.

EPS and XPS are resistant to moisture; however, XPS is more common for below-grade waterproofing and roof systems where insulation is placed over the roof membrane (IRMA, or inverted roof membrane assembly). The IRMA concept is also utilized for insulating building walls, where polystyrene insulation is placed over a barrier membrane, with the siding or cladding system installed over the insulation layer.

The use of EPS and XPS insulation in building construction offers great flexibility, compatibility, and thermal efficiency for use at all areas of a building envelope. Picking between the two will depend on particular use; choosing the appropriate type is critical for proper insulation performance.

BUILDINGS EDITOR'S UPDATE March 17,2016

For specifiers interested in insulation with recycled content, both XPS and EPS may offer solutions. Accoridng to the Department of the Interior, "Recycled plastic resin is used in some extruded and expanded polystyrene. Amoco Foam Products uses 50% recycled resin in its Amofoam®-RCY extruded polystyrene (XPS), half of which is post-consumer, according to the company... Expanded polystyrene (EPS) can also be made out of recycled polystyrene. The simplest recycling involves crumbling the old EPS into small pieces and remolding them into usable shapes. Any polystyrene can be recycled into building insulation, but because of fire retardants, old building insulation cannot usually be recycled into non-building applications." The county Legislature on Monday voted, 23-13, with three absentees, to expand its polystyrene ban to include prohibiting use of the products for food service throughout Albany County, building on the ban first enacted in 2014 impacting chain food establishments only.

Prior to the vote, dozens of Albany County residents and special interest groups as well as polystyrene lobbyists and manufacturers provided a mix of opinions on whether the expanded ban should move forward.

“This is an opportunity to protect the environment and protect the health of the workers who are making polystyrene,” said Judith Enck, a former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regional commissioner.

Meanwhile, an employee at Capital City Rescue Mission spoke out against the proposal.

A similar expansion on the ban was defeated last year.

With the latest local law, establishments that used the commonly known Styrofoam products for takeout, or coffee, will have to switch to recyclable, or compostable, materials or face fines.

The fines are set on a scale, with the first offense costing no more than $250, the second costing $500 and three or more violations costing $1,000, according to the Local Law “L.”

The ban will only be enforceable on food service establishments permitted by the Albany County Department of Health and located in the county.

It exempts nonprofit organizations that sell food at fundraising events “incidental to its primary purpose.” Waivers can be issued for entities that can show the switch would be a financial hardship.

Grocery stores, which are permitted by the state, also are exempt from the local law.

Republican Legislator Paul Burgdorf voted against the measure and scoffed at the provisions in the local law that allows for waivers and exemptions. He also questioned why the bigger impact – packaging Styrofoam for appliances and electronics, for example – isn’t being tackled.

“If you really want to make an environmental step forward you don’t go after the 2 percent, you go after the 90 percent,” Burgdorf said.

Coeymans Democrat Richard Touchette supported the expanded ban, and found the mechanism for waivers satisfactory.

“It’s a reasonable approach to keep some polystyrene off our streets and out of our waterways,” he said.

Dozens of employees with Genpak, a food packaging manufacturer in Orange County, lined legislative chambers dressed in green shirts sporting the company’s logo and holding signs stating “Enough is enough, vote no on the ban.”

The company paid for their time and travel to Albany County to participate in Monday evening’s meeting, said Clark Wooley, a national accounts manager for Genpak, which also has a location in Queensbury.

“Employees are passionate. Their jobs are on the line,” he said. “The infrastructure (for recycling) needs to change.”

Wooley urged legislators to focus on the recycling system and explore options for recycling Styrofoam, which he says can be used in construction projects even if soiled.

Republicans attempted to pursue recycling efforts for the product, but a pilot study was voted down by the legislature earlier this year. Those opposed to the study were concerned about how it would be funded – via a polystyrene manufacturer.
