While EPS and XPS are two different products, they do have some similar characteristics and fall under the same manufacturing standard: ASTM C578 Standard Specification for Rigid, Cellular Polystyrene Thermal Insulation.
Pros and Cons of EPS and XPS Pros:
Recyclable products that assist with LEED points. Won’t support mold or mildew growth. Long-term, stable R-value. Can be placed below grade. Can be utilized for inverted assemblies (over membrane). Cons:
Exposure to sun will deteriorate the product. Solvents/solvent-based materials cause irreversible damage. Elevated temperatures (above 250 degrees F.) will “melt” polystyrene. Incompatible with certain thermoplastics, polystyrene insulations are known to draw plasticizers out of thermoplastic membranes, causing permanent degradation. Polystyrene is flammable, requiring proper placement in any assembly. This particular specification covers the different types and physical properties of cellular polystyrene intended for use as thermal insulation. Polystyrene insulation materials that fall under ASTM C578 fall into several different classifications: Type I through Type XII (with the exception of Type III, which is no longer available). The different classifications relate directly to physical characteristics of each type – most notably, the density, compressive resistance, and R-value. The range in densities and compressive strengths allows for specific uses on different parts of a building.
Polystyrene insulation is manufactured in a variety of board sizes – usually a minimum of 1-inch thick. Tapered units are also manufactured for use in roofing assemblies where the insulation is used to create slope for positive drainage. One of the more common uses in roofing is the ballasted single-ply roof assembly, where a roof membrane is placed over the insulation and ballasted with rock, concrete pavers, or other material.
Polystyrene insulations can be used in asphalt built-up roofing systems; however, provisions must be made to protect the insulation from heat (i.e. hot bitumen or torch) and solvent-based products (i.e. adhesives). In addition, certain thermoplastic roof membranes require a separation layer between the layer of insulation and the membrane.
گروه تولیدی ایران ورق
EPS and XPS are resistant to moisture; however, XPS is more common for below-grade waterproofing and roof systems where insulation is placed over the roof membrane (IRMA, or inverted roof membrane assembly). The IRMA concept is also utilized for insulating building walls, where polystyrene insulation is placed over a barrier membrane, with the siding or cladding system installed over the insulation layer.
The use of EPS and XPS insulation in building construction offers great flexibility, compatibility, and thermal efficiency for use at all areas of a building envelope. Picking between the two will depend on particular use; choosing the appropriate type is critical for proper insulation performance.

BUILDINGS EDITOR'S UPDATE March 17,2016
For specifiers interested in insulation with recycled content, both XPS and EPS may offer solutions. Accoridng to the Department of the Interior, "Recycled plastic resin is used in some extruded and expanded polystyrene. Amoco Foam Products uses 50% recycled resin in its Amofoam®-RCY extruded polystyrene (XPS), half of which is post-consumer, according to the company... Expanded polystyrene (EPS) can also be made out of recycled polystyrene. The simplest recycling involves crumbling the old EPS into small pieces and remolding them into usable shapes. Any polystyrene can be recycled into building insulation, but because of fire retardants, old building insulation cannot usually be recycled into non-building applications." The county Legislature on Monday voted, 23-13, with three absentees, to expand its polystyrene ban to include prohibiting use of the products for food service throughout Albany County, building on the ban first enacted in 2014 impacting chain food establishments only.
Prior to the vote, dozens of Albany County residents and special interest groups as well as polystyrene lobbyists and manufacturers provided a mix of opinions on whether the expanded ban should move forward.
گروه تولیدی ایران ورق
Recommended Video “This is an opportunity to protect the environment and protect the health of the workers who are making polystyrene,” said Judith Enck, a former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regional commissioner.
Meanwhile, an employee at Capital City Rescue Mission spoke out against the proposal.
A similar expansion on the ban was defeated last year.
Lots of folks here, some asking the county to NOT expand the styrofoam ban and others supporting paid sick days (the latter is not on the agenda this evening). #albany #albanycounty pic.twitter.com/MukoqRqvmD
— Amanda Fries (@mandy_fries) August 13, 2018 With the latest local law, establishments that used the commonly known Styrofoam products for takeout, or coffee, will have to switch to recyclable, or compostable, materials or face fines.
The fines are set on a scale, with the first offense costing no more than $250, the second costing $500 and three or more violations costing $1,000, according to the Local Law “L.”
The ban will only be enforceable on food service establishments permitted by the Albany County Department of Health and located in the county.
It exempts nonprofit organizations that sell food at fundraising events “incidental to its primary purpose.” Waivers can be issued for entities that can show the switch would be a financial hardship.
Grocery stores, which are permitted by the state, also are exempt from the local law.
Republican Legislator Paul Burgdorf voted against the measure and scoffed at the provisions in the local law that allows for waivers and exemptions. He also questioned why the bigger impact – packaging Styrofoam for appliances and electronics, for example – isn’t being tackled.
“If you really want to make an environmental step forward you don’t go after the 2 percent, you go after the 90 percent,” Burgdorf said.
Coeymans Democrat Richard Touchette supported the expanded ban, and found the mechanism for waivers satisfactory.
“It’s a reasonable approach to keep some polystyrene off our streets and out of our waterways,” he said.
Dozens of employees with Genpak, a food packaging manufacturer in Orange County, lined legislative chambers dressed in green shirts sporting the company’s logo and holding signs stating “Enough is enough, vote no on the ban.”
The company paid for their time and travel to Albany County to participate in Monday evening’s meeting, said Clark Wooley, a national accounts manager for Genpak, which also has a location in Queensbury.
“Employees are passionate. Their jobs are on the line,” he said. “The infrastructure (for recycling) needs to change.”
Wooley urged legislators to focus on the recycling system and explore options for recycling Styrofoam, which he says can be used in construction projects even if soiled.
Republicans attempted to pursue recycling efforts for the product, but a pilot study was voted down by the legislature earlier this year. Those opposed to the study were concerned about how it would be funded – via a polystyrene manufacturer.

Now that New York City has joined Seattle, Portland, and Washington D.C. in banning polystyrene foam—better known as Styrofoam—it looks like the iconic Styrofoam coffee cups and squeaky packing peanuts are going the way of the dinosaurs.
Why Do We Use Styrofoam?
Styrofoam has been a popular material since it was developed in the 1940’s because it’s cheap, lightweight, and disposable. Unfortunately, since Styrofoam is made from polymers, like plastic, this material never breaks down in the landfill.
This is a particularly big problem because research indicates that Styrofoam may be carcinogenic for humans. The good news is that there are plenty of options for cheap, lightweight materials that are better for your health and the environment.
Check out this list of alternatives to Styrofoam items to see what might someday be coming to a coffee shop or mailbox near you!
1. Mushroom Material
Credit: Ecovative Design
These materials are grown rather than made. No, seriously—they’re made from mushrooms! Agricultural waste is mixed with mushroom fungus to grow a fully sustainable packaging alternative.

2. Plantable Packaging
Credit: UFP Technologies
Are you dissatisfied with the plant-growing properties of your standard packaging materials? I mean, who isn’t, right? Seeds embedded in this fiber board can turn your next mail delivery into a cute window garden.
3. Edible Packing Peanuts
Credit: Alligator Sunglasses
Packing peanuts are even more fun when you can eat them. We can’t guarantee they’ll taste great, but since they’re made completely of cornstarch, you don’t have to worry if your pets decide to snack on them.
4. InCycle® Cups
Credit: MicroGREEN, Inc.
MicroGREEN uses their unique technology to add carbon dioxide to recycled plastics, creating a lightweight, durable plastic that’s easier to recycle and reuse.
5. Bamboo Fiber Eco Bowl
Credit: Nova68
Tom Dixon’s note to customers explains that these bowls are made from powdered bamboo fiber mixed with resin. The note says, “After a long functional life they could retire as a plant pot or simply be composted back to the earth.”
6. EarthAware™ Biodegradeable Packing Materials
Credit: Epoch Times
It looks like a regular plastic air pouch, but EarthAware™’s packing materials are made with a special type of plastic that can biodegrade in just 5 years. That’s a lot quicker than Styrofoam’s biodegradation date, which is never.
7. EarthShell “Paper” Plates
Credit: Epoch Times
There’s no paper at all in these disposable plates. Instead, rice, potatoes, and limestone could be the future of Central Park picnics.
8. Peat Plastic
Credit: Giz Mag
Peat is most often used to make gardening pots, Scottish whiskey, and weird smelling fires. But thanks to a Finnish research organization, this cheap and abundant resource can also be made into biodegradable cups and utensils.
9. ecotainer® Cups
Credit: Biomass Packaging
More than 90% of the Styrofoam in New York’s landfills came from food containers like plates, take-out boxes, and disposable cups. These cute ecotainer® cups, made from recycled plants and wood fibers, could easily fill that niche.
10. Loliware Edible Cups
Credit: The Sustainable Leader
These may not replace your standard “to-go” cup, but we can totally see New Yorkers loving this edible glassware. Made from plant gelatin, these vegan-friendly cups come in flavors that compliment your beverage. They’re also super eco-friendly—whether they break down in a landfill or in your belly.

Polystyrene, a hard, stiff, brilliantly transparent synthetic resin produced by the polymerizationof styrene. It is widely employed in the food-service industry as rigid trays and containers, disposable eating utensils, and foamed cups, plates, and bowls. Polystyrene is also copolymerized, or blended with other polymers, lending hardness and rigidity to a number of important plastic and rubber products.

major industrial polymers: Polystyrene (PS)

Styrene is obtained by reacting ethylene with benzene in the presence of aluminum chloride to yield ethylbenzene. The benzene group in this compound is then dehydrogenated to yield phenylethylene, or styrene, a clear liquid hydrocarbon with the chemical structure CH2=CHC6H5. Styrene is polymerized by using free-radical initiators primarily in bulk and suspension processes, although solution and emulsion methods are also employed. The structure of the polymer repeating unit can be represented as:
The presence of the pendant phenyl (C6H5) groups is key to the properties of polystyrene. Solid polystyrene is transparent, owing to these large, ring-shaped molecular groups, which prevent the polymer chains from packing into close, crystalline arrangements. In addition, the phenyl rings restrict rotation of the chains around the carbon-carbon bonds, lending the polymer its noted rigidity.
The polymerization of styrene has been known since 1839, when German pharmacist Eduard Simon reported its conversion into a solid later named metastyrol. As late as 1930 little commercial use had been found for the polymer because of brittleness and crazing (minute cracking), which were caused by impurities that brought about the cross-linking of the polymer chains. By 1937 American chemist Robert Dreisbach and others at the Dow Chemical Company’s physics laboratory had obtained purified styrene monomer through the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene and developed a pilot polymerization process. By 1938 polystyrene was being produced commercially. It quickly became one of the most important modern plastics, owing to the low cost of producing large volumes of styrene monomer, the ease of shaping the melted polymer in injection-molding operations, and the optical and physical properties of the material.
Polystyrene foam was formerly made with the aid of chlorofluorocarbon blowing agents—a class of compounds that has been banned for environmental reasons. Now foamed by pentane or carbon dioxide gas, polystyrene is made into insulation and packaging materials as well as food containers such as beverage cups, egg cartons, and disposable plates and trays. Solid polystyrene products include injection-molded eating utensils, videocassettes and audiocassettes, and cases for audiocassettes and compact discs. Many fresh foods are packaged in clear vacuum-formed polystyrene trays, owing to the high gas permeability and good water-vapour transmission of the material. The clear windows in many postage envelopes are made of polystyrene film. The plastic recycling code number of polystyrene is #6. Recycled polystyrene products are commonly melted down and reused in foamed insulation.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a lightweight, closed cell, rigid, plastic foam insulation material produced from solid beads of polystyrene. The EPS beads are expanded and then molded into large EPS Blocks then used in walls, roofs, floors, attics, crawl spaces, EIFS, stucco, and architectural shapes. EPS offers design flexibility, high R-Values for thermal insulation, superior dimensional stability, and resistance to moisture absorption and physical degradation.
EPS is the ideal, cost-effective and easy-to-use material in all types of buildings, from houses and offices to factories and schools. StarRfoam meets or exceeds the requirements of ASTM C578, Standard Specification for Rigid, Cellular Polystyrene Thermal Insulation.
THERMAL PERFORMANCE
Thermal resistance is an index of a material’s resistance to the flow of heat. The higher the R-value, the better the resistance to the flow of heat (Btu’s) and the better the insulation. EPS is 98 percent air, and is therefore an excellent thermal insulator and far better coat per insulation value compared to other insulators. The benefit of EPS is not made with blowing agents, such as HCFC and therefore the R Value is stable and does not change over time.
STORAGE
Long-term exposure to sunlight causes yellowing of the surface due to ultraviolet light, however, this has little effect on mechanical properties. If stored outdoors, cover EPS with opaque polyethylene film, tarps, or similar material
LIMITATIONS
Some EPS applications must be independently QC certified by a third party testing and QA agency recognized by code. Material shall be tested and labeled in compliance with applicable code and industry standard requirements. EPS has been used in construction for over 30 years because it combines high R-Value and rigid strength with resiliency.
DISCLAIMER:
Thermal plastic insulation is combustible and should be protected from flame and other heat source. It should be applied according to the applicable building code, include the requirement for a 15 minute thermal barrier between itself and the interior of the building.

Technical Information General
All Redicoat® shapes are precision cut from virgin Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam using specially built computer-controlled equipment. EPS is a non-toxic, rigid, closed-cell insulation material, white in color, and has a Class 1 rated flame spread of 25 or less. After the shape is cut, a strong reinforcing mesh is applied directly to the foam, after which the surface is machine-coated with a polymer-modified cementitious material that is extremely hard and durable when dry. As supplied, Redicoat® shapes are ready for installation and finishing, and are easily cut and mitered using conventional tools.
Installing Redicoat® Shapes
Redicoat® shapes are typically applied to a stucco browncoat or sandblasted stucco surface. The surface must be clean and dry.
Unfold the uncoated mesh on the back of the Redicoat® foam molding so that it will lie flat against the wall surface.
Use a 3/8″ notched trowel to apply a primer-adhesive (example: Omega FoamTek, DryBond or equivalent) to the back of the Redicoat® foam molding and to the surface of the wall 3 to 4 inches above and below where the molding will be applied.
Apply the Redicoat® foam molding to the wall surface and adjust its position as needed, then trowel the mesh into the primer-adhesive. Larger moldings may require temporary support until the adhesive has dried. Tape or masonry nails are often used, and additional adhesive applied to the substrate may also help. To join lengths together, use primer-adhesive between the joints. StraightRedicoat® lengths are simply joined end-to-end. For best results, we recommend reinforcing the joint with fiber mesh and more primer-adhesive.
Finishing
Important: Redicoat® should not be left in its natural unfinished state. It must be painted, sealed or coated.
To Paint: Use any high-quality acrylic paint. To Seal: Use a water-based acrylic sealer (example: Omega DecoStone Sealer, which dries clear and can be sprayed, brushed or rolled on). To Coat: Always use an acrylic bonding agent (example: Omega Acrylic Bonder or equivalent) when using a cementitious finishing system over Redicoat®. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding compatibility, mixing, application, etc. Design Considerations
Redicoat® foam moldings are decorative trim designed for exterior application to stucco surfaces. Intended for non-structural use, they are typically applied over stucco browncoat in new construction or during remodel.
یونولیت
Cautions
Redicoat® foam moldings are decorative only and are never to be used in structural applications. Redicoat® foam moldings are for exterior use only and are never to be used in interior applications. Redicoat® foam moldings that appear capable of supporting human weight by service personnel should be structurally supported or protected. This is usually done with metal or wood framing. Redicoat® is intended for use as ornamental trim, and not as a primary weather barrier. Installation of Redicoat® should not interfere with the proper function of windows, doors, weep holes, etc. Redicoat® is combustible. Protect from flame or other high heat sources both during storage as well as in application (e.g. chimneys, etc.).
